Staging a Small Bedroom

As seen on homestaging.about.com

by Ronique Gibson

This article provides great ideas of how to make a small bedroom look bigger and brighter, which we all want to have, but it also explains why that is important when selling your home.  Enjoy!

Decluttering Tips to Enlarge your Small Bedroom Visually

One essential area buyers focus on when shopping for homes is space. Most buyers want to move to upsize their home and will not pay attention to small homes. The good news is even the smallest of homes can be enlarged visually.  The recent trend of more home buyers seeking homes in overcrowded communities means sellers have to get creative with their staging. A few simple adjustments can transform tiny homes, especially small rooms like bedrooms.

Remove Excess Clutter throughout your Bedroom

Getting rid of unnecessary furniture, and other home decor to create a spacious room that is attractive to buyers. Set aside time to stage your bedroom correctly before potential buyers view your home. The bedroom should feel like a retreat for buyers to enjoy each evening, but should also be a place for rejuvenating the spirit for the next day.  Here’s some simple ways to increase the visual space in your bedrooms.

Keep the Room Clean and Tidy

Cleaning and decluttering go hand in hand. The first thing you should do is remove all unnecessary furniture from the room. As inviting as your bedroom may be, its numerous belongings may be off-putting to buyers. Make sure that nothing is on the floor or on furniture surfaces. Remove family photos, stuffed animals, the TV, and other personal items. Store small items in pullout storage drawers under your bed.  The smaller the room is, the more essential it is for effective organization.

A Smaller Bed Could Make your Bedroom Look Larger

Consider a Smaller Bed

Most bedrooms have king size beds which take up a lot of space. Replace your large bed with a queen bed or a full size bed to make the room seem bigger. If you are staging a kid’s room, use a twin bed. Position the bed in the middle of the wall opposite the bedroom door. It should be the first thing buyers see when they walk into the room. Beautify it with fresh linen, a comforter, and colorful throw pillows.
A bed that is too big for a room will visually decrease the square feet. While your home is on the market, resist the temptation to buy more furniture pieces. If you have to, choose small, comfy pieces that are not bulky.

Remove Excess Furniture

Large furniture pieces such as vanities and large dressers could be inessential and should be moved into another room of your home or put into storage. If your bedroom is really small, don’t add anything other than night tables and a small chair. Keep in mind that the purpose of staging the room is to define its purpose and not to show buyers how many furniture pieces it can accommodate. Ensure there is enough space for people to walk around and don’t block the flow of traffic with furniture.

Use Mirrors and Natural Light to Make your Bedroom Larger

Bring in Natural and Artificial Lighting

The power of good lighting cannot be overestimated.  Light can trick the eye and make a room look bigger than it actually is. Use plenty of light throughout the day when showing your bedroom. Open windows at daytime and ensure the bedroom lighting in the evening is varied. Place lamps on your bedside tables to soften the space. However, make sure they match because dissimilar ones can be a distraction.
You can get shabby-chic white lamps, black lacquered lamps, or even Asian-inspired lamps.  To give your small bedroom plenty of style, use window treatments properly. Choose those that soften harsh sunlight but still let in light. Window sheers behind window treatments help your bedroom have diffused light on extra bright and sunny days.

Decorate with Mirrors when Possible

Mirrors enlarge spaces by reflecting light from windows and lighting. They do not consume visual space but double it. They are an inexpensive way of filling the blank spaces on your walls. Place mirrors across windows to augment the light in your bedroom. You can also place a mirror across a piece of art to call attention to it.
Small rooms, especially bedrooms, can be hard to stage. Modern buyers want a lot of space and they can disregard your home if you have a small bedroom. But do not despair. Simply use these home staging tricks to make your bedroom appeal to as many buyers as possible. You will not only increase its size visually, you’ll make it stylish and cozy.

Shelving Decor for the Home

Shelves

As I have mentioned in previous posts, I will be moving within the next few months (exact date unknown).  My plan is to redo my home decor, so I have been searching the internet for inspiration. One thing I know for sure is I love a minimalist style, however, I also have too many  decor accessories to display for that style.  I also, know that I will be moving into an apartment and I am assuming my wall space will be limited. Something else you might have seen in previous posts is I try to have style with functionality.  With all that being said, I find great importance in shelves; for their functionality, storage and style!  This post will highlight shelves, hanging baskets and storage options. Everything you see here I am currently debating on which will work best for my new apartment for the new look I am trying to create; as well as what will serve the most functionality.  I hope you find something for you too! Enjoy!

Invisible Book Shelf one for $16 or two for $30 at urbanoutfitters.com
I have seen this type of invisible book shelf cheaper, so it may be worth doing some research to find a better price.  I love this idea for a little book nook or any other place; using books for decor is a great way to show your personality.

Magazine Wall Rack $19 at urbanoutfitters.com
I have recently subscribed to several home decor magazines, and I feel like this wall rack would be a great way to keep them organized as well as display them.  The wall rack can also be used for mail.

I plan to do a bigger search for other hanging baskets, just because this is a little pricey for what it is, but I love this one specifically for having folded towels handy right by the shower as well as being able to have items on top.  It would also look super cute to have potted plants on top.

Wire Wall Grid $59 at urbanoutfitters.com
This would be really cute in my daughter's room.  It would be an easy and cute way for her to clip her art and pics anyway she chooses.  Click on the link for a better view, it really is cute!

Tower Bathroom Storage Cart $69 at urbanoutfitters.com
I have had the opportunity to see the layout of the apartments I will be moving into in the next few months.  So, I already know the bathroom is very large, but does not have a lot of storage.  When I saw this cart, I thought it would be perfect for storage and stylish.  I could put hand towels hanging on the side, toilet paper rolls as well as all my toiletries.

Rustic Shelf- Kitchen $101.99 at westelm.com
I enjoy the fact I could put your spices on top and have a kitchen towel hanging on the bottom.  I can even add S-hooks to hang kitchen utensils, however, I don't like the price.  I plan to search etsy.com for something similar with a better price.

Build Your Own Gabrielle Component System $14.99-$139 at potterybarn.com
I recommend clicking this link, everything that is in this picture is sold separately.  I would love to have those hanging cups for the kitchen for wooden spoons or could even use them in the bathroom for make-up brushes.  If you notice on the very top of this picture is a hanging shelf; shelf and cups hanging together from the same hooks is very convenient!

Cube Display Shelves $79.-$99 at potterybarn.com
I love these shelves for their gorgeous style!  And, as I said earlier, I have many decor accessories that would be displayed so nicely on these shelves.  I only wish the price wasn't so high, I hope to catch them on sale!

Diamond Cross Planes Shelf $139 at urbonoutfitters.com
I love the uniqueness of this shelf, I also love the way the plants look on it.  If I were to purchase this shelf I would plan to use it outside on my apartment balcony to display outdoor plants.

Set of 3 Floating Shelf $99 at cb2.com
You HAVE to check these shelves out at  cb2.com!  The shelves can be displayed in a number of ways and  have countless things to put on them.   I chose this picture because I like how they leaned a framed picture in two of the shelves as well as hung a metal prism on the wall in the middle shelf (easier to see the prism on the website).  I especially love how unique the shelves are, by moving them around you could use them a number of ways to create a new look over and over again.

Geo Wire Wall Shelf $39 at urbanoutfitters.com
I love, love this shelf for the specific purpose of displaying a plant, the geometric shapes adds a great look for any room.   I can see myself using it in my bathroom.

Peaks Shelf $79 at urbanoutfitters.com
I like this particular shelf because of the shape. I will have to admit I am not too excited about the price, especially since it is a small shelf.

Stairway White Wall Mounted Bookcase $399 at cb2.com
I bet by now you can guess the price of this shelf is too rich for my blood, you would be right!  But I would love to have it if I could, I love that it is mounted onto the wall.

High Rise Shelf $99.95 at cb2.com
I love these shelves!  The price is for one, which I think that is all I would need.  I love that this shelf is also mounted to the wall.  It would take no floor room.  I would use it in my bathroom to display folded towels (being able to have towels on a shelf will free up room in the linen closet for sheets and blankets) as well as put decorative baskets with toiletry's and of course some small plants. This shelf is going to be a must for me!

I think this hanging shelf for a nightstand is so cute, but I also think someone like me who spills everything and knock things over probably wouldn't be the best thing for me, but it sure is "boho" cute!!

I posted items from etsy.comcb2.com, westelm.com, urbanoutfitters.com, and potterybarn.com all of which had many other shelves that I loved as much as the ones I posted here, be sure and check them out!!

Thanks For Stopping By!  Tell me what you thought of the shelves, and what is your favorite?

If there are rules that you as a renter must follow, make it these 10 commandments. Because, while paying your rent on time is important, so too is making sure your place is personalized and stylish. Working within the boundaries of your landlord, it's little things like a new light fixture that will make an impact without costing a lot of time or money. And, the best part about this entire list is that you'll leave with your security deposit intact once it's time to move up and on.
